Did you know that Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS) Adult Education partners with the Henrico County Sheriff’s Department to offer free GED, Pre-GED, English as a Second Language, Computer Technology, Automotive, and Cosmetology* classes all within the walls of Henrico Regional Jails East and West? We also offer collaborative Exceptional Education for qualifying students. Our 10 person full-time HCPS staff works directly with the Nine Mile Road and Mount Vernon Adult Education Centers to make sure that almost everyone who wants to continue their education may do so – before, during and after incarceration.
In a typical year, about 350 student inmates enroll in academic classes, and another 350 pursue vocational classes. Students attend classes year round for up to 20 hours per week– a noteworthy opportunity for adults who may not have been in school since dropping out years ago. Annually more than 50 earn their GEDs while incarcerated in Henrico Jails! Many of our GED graduates continue to meet success in our vocational school. Additionally, our Pre-GED classes provide reading remediation for learners with diplomas and GEDs who need a brief review to meet vocational admission requirements.
Our five academic classes contribute significantly to HCPS Adult Education’s Tier One status as determined by the Virginia Department of Education. We also comply with, and consistently exceed, the educational standards established for American Correctional Association accreditation.
Tours of both jails, including Educational Services, can be arranged through the Henrico Sheriff’s Office.
