Adult Basic Education (ABE)/GED® Program

Classes provide instruction in Adult Basic Education, pre-GED and GED® skills including the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, and life skills.

Classes are for adults over the age of 18 who are not enrolled in regular school.

GETTING STARTED……

Before beginning classes, students must:

  • Register at the location they plan to attend. Must provide a government-issued photo ID.
  • Take a TABE placement test (Test of Adult Basic Education).
  • Attend class orientation.

Registration and placement testing must occur for new and continuing students prior to class starting dates.

Tuition for first-time and returning students is $25.00 per session*. The GED® calculator is $20. (Textbook fee information is forthcoming.)

Tuition must be paid before beginning class. No refunds available.

If an agency or business will paying the tuition fees, the student must bring documentation on the agency or business letterhead giving the Adult Education Center permission to bill them. Otherwise, the student will be responsible for paying his/her tuition.

*Due to changes in the GED® test, effective January 1, 2014, class schedules and tuition rates are subject to change.

OVERVIEW OF CLASSES

Adult Basic Education (ABE)/Pre-GED classes

  • Prepare for GED® level classes in the following subject areas:
    1. reading comprehension for social studies, science and literature
    2. writing skills
    3. math
  • Group and computer assisted instruction.
  • Day and evening classes meet twice weekly.
  • Available at the Adult Education Centers in the eastern and western portions of Henrico County.

  • Structured, short term sessions to prepare adults for the GED® test.
  • A review of math, writing skills, and reading techniques to develop critical thinking skills for science, social studies and literature.

GED® Practice Assessments

  • Results are used to indicate GED® test readiness.
  • Recommendations are made for classes or further evaluations.

NOTE: Due to the changes in the GED® test as of January 2014, fees may be applied to the computer-based practice assessments and pre-registration may be required.
