The following resources are provided to help individuals become more comfortable with the Henrico 21 rubric and to facilitate the development of a shared vocabulary and understanding of HCPS’s vision of 21st century skills.
Vision
Goal #5 in the HCPS Strategic Plan is a clear indication that our school board, our superintendent and our community believe that 21st century skills are a priority for our students. Dr. Russo’s message is clear: We need to take the next step in effectively integrating technology into our instruction.
What does an exceptional 21st century classroom look like? What are teachers doing? What are students doing?

TPCK (click to visit) – a visual framework which delineates where the 21st century classroom lies
TIPC (click to visit)- a framework that has been refined by a team of HCPS ITRTs, librarians and administrators to encourage teacher reflection on the integration of 21st century skills.

Henrico 21 Lesson Plan (click to download)
Henrico 21 Facilitators
- Break participants into small groups based on content or level.
- Model strategies for searching the Henrico 21 web site using the various search features (e.g. category drop-down menus, key word search, faceted search).
- Direct participants to select two lesson. Review the lesson, supporting documentation, and student samples.
- Engage in conversation around lesson elements related to the TIP Chart.
- Consider how subsequent lessons in your content area(s) could build on and further enhance the development of 21st century skills.
Alternative Norming Activity
- Participants break into small groups.
- Review the 2 lessons that are appropriate to your designated level (see list below). Be sure to review any ancillary materials and/or links that are embedded in the given lesson plan.
- Working in your group, participants should have a conversation around where the individual lesson scores on the TIP Chart.
- Small groups should then decide which 21st century skill could be enhanced and discuss the enhancements with respect to the TIP Chart.
