Summary

Through the study of forensic science, students used scientific research, critical thinking, observation skills, and evidence analysis. Students made predictions, tested hypotheses, and theories to solve real world problems.

Research & Information Fluency

Rating: Entry – Explanation: Students were given books on Crime Scene Investigation and specific terms that pertained to crime scenes. Students had to define terms to understand better what a Crime Scene Investigator did on a daily basis. Students also used computers. Terms included words like affidavit, evidence, larceny, etc. Students also had to look up other terms they may not have understood along the way such as ulnar loop.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students established group norms, formed teams, and organized roles to address authentic tasks each time they met as a group. They had to determine who the mystery thief of the coffee mug was. Students had to communicate and work together in their three person group to accomplish this task effectively. Without effective communication, these groups would have been in chaos.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students used critical thinking and problem solving to generate and respond to purposeful question, justify decision-making. As pretend Crime Scene Investigators, they had to rely heavily on their critical thinking and problem solving skills by using reasoning and logic to help guide them. They had to ask questions and answer them themselves along their journey.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students had to question, summarize, and make predictions on existing knowledge using provided digital tools.
