Area Models of Multiplication

Summary

This project grew from a math unit that third grade teachers had planned. As you can see by looking at the planner they had numerous hands-on activities planned to help make this abstract concept more concrete. Planning with their ITRT a simple template was and students changed and manipulated this google slide to create a model of an multiplication fact that they developed. These were then assembled and critiqued by their classmates and changes were made if needed

Research & Information Fluency

Rating: Entry – Explanation: Students followed teacher direction to complete class assignments. They created their own model, but do not extend teacher prompt to a great extent.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students used digital tools to communicate and to complete class assignments. They also appropriate digital tools to facilitate collaboration by as a class reviewing and critiquing student made models.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students generated and respond to purposeful questions about the multiplication models that they had created. Students were then forced to justify their problem-solving practices to their classmates. Students Applied a digital tool to think critically and solve create a model that required higher order thinking skills.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students created meaningful, original work within the assignment parameters. They also reflected on their work and made changes if they were necessary to refine the multiplication model that they had created.
