Summary

Understanding and connecting with art history is difficult for some students. In this lesson, students use the social bookmarking tool, Diigo, to research an era of art history and the elements and principles of art. They collaborate as a class to find the best resources, annotate their findings, and create tags using the tool. They extend their research by creating a piece of original artwork based on their findings of a material all students love- Duck tape.

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students use knowledge of appropriate source and evaluation techniques to research the elements, principles, and artistic movements. Students used informational sources of their choice and synthesized and housed their research in Diigo. Students develop questions to guide their research, and answer their questions through the annotations, article tags, and descriptions.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: The students use Diigo to communicate and collaborate within this assignment. Diigo allows the students to share information and research with one another and learn from each other’s points of view.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: The use of Diigo reinforces opportunities to think critically and gather research. Students apply the various features of Diigo (searching by tags, annotating, etc) in order to locate and save and locate information that is relevant to their research on the elements, principles, and art movements.Students then use this information to justify their duck tape creation.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Not observed – Explanation: Students did not use digital tools to create their duck tape project.
