Students collaborate with their peers to give and receive feedback using the learning platform, Schoology. After editing their poem, they create a video recording of themselves reciting the poem their work and they upload it to a discussion board in Schoology, offering their peers a chance to comment and like their work.

TIPC Ratings

Research & Information Fluency

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Research and Information Fluency: Approaching
Students used a research task sheet to begin their investigation of a person of interest. They constructed questions, generated tags, and used a variety of resources to synthesize the material for their poem. They used previous knowledge of using reliable websites to gather facts, and they cross checked their findings for accuracy. This task was authentic because it asked them to examine information and express knowledge from a different perspective.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Communication and Collaboration: Ideal
Even though students created a poem on their own, they worked in self-selected pairs to give and receive feedback. The learning platform allowed students to communicate and collaborate with students in different class periods. Students reflected on their roles as collaborators at the end of the project.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Developing
Although students used critical thinking skills for this project, it was not a major focus of the lesson. The task asked the students to write from a person’s perspective, so they had to synthesize material in order to do that.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Creativity and Innovation: Ideal
Students responded in the reflection that they loved that they could be as creative as they wanted. Generating new ideas from their research, students created products that were within and beyond the assignment directions. Some took huge risks and went beyond what was asked of them. Even though every student created a movie, they had choice as to how they constructed the video.
