This lesson is for : Kindergarten:

Summary

How are past, present, and future linked together? What does past mean? What is the present? When is the future? How do the words past, present, and future relate to the real world? Kindergarten students will explore these abstract concepts through interviews and presentations, Pixie creations, designing outfits, creating mini movies and reaching out to community members to connect these ideas to their own lives. Communication and collaboration occur throughout this lesson and students will walk away with a concrete understanding of the past, present and future.

TIPC Ratings

Research & Information Fluency

Rating: Not Observed – Explanation:

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Communication and collaboration occurred throughout this lesson. Students had to contact a family member to conduct an interview about their past. Then, kindergartners worked with fifth graders to design a Pixie slide to represent their present. Finally, students reached out to the community by writing letters to workers in the area who represent the career they would like to pursue in the future.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students elaborated on critical thinking and problem solving practices by using a variety of digital tools to figure out the best way to demonstrate their new knowledge of the past, present and future. They generated and responded to purposeful questions through their interview and had to explain their findings through a video presentation. From a blank Pixie template students had to design a visual representation that would unpack the concept of the present. Finally, students had to construct an outfit that would represent their future career and explain their plans for the future when being filmed by a friend.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students had to synthesize existing and self-generated knowledge about the past, present and future for each presentation/visual they created which ultimately led to new perspectives and insights about the abstract terms. An age appropriate reflection about the process occurred at the end of the lesson.
