This lesson is for : Grade 8:

Summary

After learning about the rights, duties, and responsibilities that each citizen has, students were then divided into groups. In these groups, using cell phones, flip cameras, or just their computers, students were told to create a Public Service Announcement. They were able to choose from the following categories:
● How do I become a Citizen
● Citizenship’s Rights, Duties, and Responsibilities
● Traits of a Citizen and Fulfilling Community Needs

They had a rubric and a time limit to create their video. They were able to do live action or could do create a video of pictures with a voice over.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Teacher facilitated student collaboration within their teams as the students created PSAs to be displayed on the morning video announcements. The members of the student teams adopted roles to complete this assignment.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students created their PSAs after careful consideration of what content they believed should be included. Students generated questions to help guide their video creation and were provided many opportunities to express their decision making skills as a team.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Although there was not much choice in the end result, the students took their collective knowledge about becoming a citizen and what it means to be a citizen and created Public Service Announcements that were shown on the school’s morning announcements. The products ranged from narrated slide shows to scripted, acted out scenarios for the PSAs. The students also shared the movies in their class where they voted for their favorite. The students were extremely engaged in creating the best PSA they could and some even worked outside of class to make the best product they could.
