Democracy, We Love It!

Summary

Whether students realize it or not, the government that they live under affects them every day. The Constitution and Bill of Rights allows them to live a life with freedoms that students in other countries have never had or are just recently being exposed to. The decisions that presidents have made in the past and in the future also affect our students’ lives. This project allowed them to express how they feel concerning the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the job of the presidents. The students created a visual project to help them do this. The visual project expressed how the major parts of our democracy influence them on a daily basis. Students worked in groups of 3 and brainstormed to discuss the effects of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the President’s role in democracy. They created a visual project using Windows Movie Maker, VoiceThread, PowerPoint, or another tool of their choice to display their individual feelings about democracy. They recorded their voices to fully explain their interactions with democracy that are displayed in the pictures and add music and other creative elements.

TIPC Ratings

Developing: Students researched elements of democracy, implementing search techniques demonstrated by the teacher and had to analyze the information.

Approaching: Students used the Google Presentation to collaborate and gather their pictures. They were able to use the chat forum to discuss the progress of their project.

Approaching: Students answered open-ended/opinion questions and had to support their answers with pictures. This project was not just about basic facts about the Constitution, the President, and other aspects of government, it is about how the government effects our lives.

Their answers, which were opinions, led to a variety of choices of images to support their thoughts. They could choose from a variety of media to express their opinions and the student products covered a wide variety of digital tools.
