Exploring Space

Summary

Students will work in groups to locate answers to questions generated about their chosen topic on the solar system. The group will then select a digital media from three options to present their topic to the class on presentation day. Their products and process will be assessed using the attached rubric.

TIPC Ratings

Approaching: This lesson falls into the low-end of the approaching domain of the TIP-C. In groups, students constructed their own questions to guide their research. Students were given access to digital resources (websites, OneSearch, Discovery Science), and print resources (trade books, magazines, SOL guides, text books) and the time to utilize them to locate the information necessary to answer the questions the group had generated. They were also available for students to access at each stage of the process to verify information.

Developing: This lesson falls into the high-end of the developing domain of the TIP-C. Although the group was teacher-selected due to instructional and behavioral considerations, students established group norms and organized roles within the group to accomplish the class assignment. Students utilized a Google Doc to add individual research notes to facilitate group collaboration.

Developing: This lesson falls into the low-end of the developing domain of the TIP-C. In groups, students chose which digital tool to apply to solve the class assignment. They elaborated on their critical thinking when prompted and solved problems as a group as they arose.

Developing: This lesson falls into the high-end of the developing domain of the TIP-C. Students were given options of digital tools to use to present their research summaries to their peers. They were challenged to seek out creative ways to engage their audience.
