Summary
In this project students are assigned a terrestrial biome to research and present using Google Earth. They are to research the climatic conditions that contribute to a biome; describe major geologic features of a biome; identify plant and animal species of a biome; and describe examples of how the biome is being exploited by humans. Once the research has been completed, students will create place marks in Google Earth to illustrate their biome. All placemarkers will be combined into one file, shared with all classes. Students will then be asked to answer questions about all of the biomes based on a combined Google Earth presentation.
TIPC Ratings
Ideal – Teacher assigns research relevant to the updated Biology II curriculum and provide meaningful task and presentation tool. Students are asked to evaluate research media and interact using a new display tool, Google Earth. Students must first research for their own placemarker, then when all placemarkers are compiled onto one .kmz file, they must decipher accurate information.
Approaching – Teacher provides necessary directions for completion as well as compiling student data for sharing. Students created individual files which were then compiled and shared among classes so students would have a library of biomes to use. Students are reviewing the compilation of all classes’ presentations. This collaboration happened in class and without direct supervision.
Approaching – Students could elaborate critical thinking and the process for creating the placemarks if prompted. The teacher did require the students to think critically and solve the proposed problems. Students had to justify their decisions and answers to each other and to Mr. Pratt.
Approaching – Students create meaningful original works that address authentic situations. The teacher has designed opportunities for students to synthesize, research, communicate, collaborate, and critically think about biomes and the impact on the entire environment. The teacher is providing a new presentation tool for research. Students are required to present their research using a unique method. As they review other student’s work, they can reflect on the aesthetics and accuracy of their work.

Thanks for sharing the starting KMZ file. That makes it much easier to want to try this. There are directions on the TechTips site too: http://blogs.henrico.k12.va.us/techtips/category/resources/google-earth/
